The Wouxun KG-UV9GX is a firmware-modified & GMRS-calibrated version of the revered and trusted Wouxun KG-UV9P & Wouxun KG-UV9D Plus amateur radios, co-designed by Mark Lindsey (K6LED/WQXR567) and sold exclusively by BetterSafeRadio. The Wouxun 9-Series radios are known for their quality double-conversion superheterodyne receivers, stable performance & pro features, while remaining easy to use, even for beginners. The new UV9GX GMRS is functionally similar, with a few modified features that are restricted, prohibited or unwanted on the GMRS band, such as the cross-band repeater, power levels, and modulation bandwidth.

The UV9GX is an upgraded version of the wildly popular KG-UV9G PRO, with several refinements and additions, making it an even better value.

If you like the clarity and reliability of the Wouxun KG-805G and KG-905G or the expanded features on the 935G, then you’ll love the massively upgraded functionality, features and the true dual superheterodyne receivers on the UV9GX for normal everyday GMRS use, as well as for emergency EmComm and SHTF uses.

The Wouxun KG-UV9GX works with the RT Systems UV9G Advanced Programming Software & Cable Kit, and the 9GX will accept any program from the UV9G PRO, UV9D Plus, UV9PX or UV9P (but with Tx locked to GMRS).

The optional slimmer 2000 mAh battery pack from the original UV9D & UV9D Plus is also compatible with the UV9GX for a lighter, thinner body. Check out all of the Wouxun 9-Series Accessories, which are all interchangeable.

Note: The UV9GX can be RESET by a keypad Menu option. Doing so will return the radio to a standard 30-channel GMRS configuration (with other useful channels such as all NOAA WX, Marine Emergency, Air Emergency, SAR/EMT & Ham Call Freqs.) and will erase all of the other pre-programed SHTF channels and extra GMRS banks. Please save a backup your radio codeplug (programing file) using the free Wouxun factory software and the “red” Wouxun USB cable (sold separately) or the RT Systems Advanced Programing Software & USB Cable Kit (sold separately) in case you ever unintentionally RESET the radio. If you’ve accidentally RESET your radio, please see the restoration options on my Custom Radio Programing Services page.

Note: Transmitting on the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) requires a “no-test” license (currently $35 for 10 years and good for your entire immediate family – typically takes only a few days to obtain your GMRS license from the FCC).

Shipping Note: Due to USPS restrictions, I’m only able to ship 1 extra battery pack per radio and only 2 battery packs total per package via 2-3 Day Priority-Mail air service (so 2 radios, or 1 radio with an extra battery, in each box Priority Mail air shipment). Orders with 3 or more Li-ion battery packs in a box must be sent by Priority-Mail surface transport, which may take longer than the normal 2-3 days. Packages with batteries and accessories (without radios) weighing over 5.5 pounds will need to be split up into multiple shipments. Sometimes the shopping cart doesn’t properly calculate this, but I will contact you if there’s any need for additional shipping on larger/bulk orders. Unfortunately, this GMRS radio is not legal for use in Canada, so I am not able to honor orders that ship to Canada at this time (US-based mail forwarding service are fine). Contact me if you have any questions.

Detailed Description

The BSR-Exclusive Wouxun KG-UV9GX is a 999 channel programable dual-band handheld analog double-conversion superheterodyne FM GMRS two-way radio transceiver with wide 7-band receive range, TDR (true dual receive), repeater capability (with CTCSS/DCS split-tones and non-standard PL tones), and pro features ideal for families, scouts, SHTF preppers, survivalists, over landers, truckers, businesses, or EmComm emergency communication groups. It has 2.5 kHz tuning steps and comes custom pre-programed with 906 channels for GMRS + SHTF* (ships with Tx locked to GMRS band for Part 95E compliance), for dual-use GMRS transceiver & analog AM/FM scanner operation. User programable with free downloadable Wouxun programing software (link above – requires optional USB cable & x86 Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or 11, or a Mac running Parallels) or the RT Systems UV9D Advanced Programing Software & USB Cable Kit (except for 219–230 MHz range).

With a full legal 5+ Watts of power (on UHF) and a talk-around range of 2 to 7+ miles (much more when used with a GMRS repeater or at optimal elevations with minimal line-of-sight obstructions), the KG-UV9GX provides reliable recreational or emergency radio communications for personal disaster preparedness, family outings, scouting, prepping, survival, camping, off-roading, trekking, business operations, Neighborhood Watch, REACT, CERT, Guardian Angels & EARS groups to keep in touch when other methods of communication break down. IP55 rated and Part 95E & 15B FCC Certified. The UV9GX is custom power calibrated for GMRS simplex & repeater use (at a 465 MHz center) and transmits on all 30 GMRS frequencies with the proper legal power and modulation bandwidth.

The UV9GX comes pre-programed with 5 ready-to-use banks of GMRS channels, including 1 full GMRS bank (with repeater channels), 3 additional banks of repeater channels, and a full “FRS” bank to better facilitate communicating with FRS and older hybrid FRS/GMRS radios (with PL/privacy tones set). You can easily change the PL/Privacy Tones (or DCS Codes) from the front panel on any of these 76 pre-programed channels. This is handy when you want to program in all the available repeaters in 4 geographical areas without having to re-program on the fly every time. Due to FCC GMRS and radio firmware restrictions, the repeater direction and offset features can’t be programed from the front panel, which is why I provide the 4 pre-programed repeater banks. However, the 9GX can be easily re-programed via software to add as many GMRS (or other) channels as you desire, or many more repeater banks that you can then customize on the fly. You can also copy any existing repeater channel and write to to another memory channel, then change your PL tones, creating as many new repeater channels as you wish, in the field. You could use all 999 channels to program 124 banks of all 8 repeater channels, if you wanted to. Or, turn the radio into an all-receive scanner. It’s totally up to you!

Note that when the UV9GX is reset using the [MENU_61 “RESET”] function, the radio will reset to a default configuration of all 30 GMRS channels, including the 8 repeater channels, which you can then customize the PL/Privacy Tones on as desired. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation and need to restore basic GMRS functionality quickly, this reset feature will get you there in a few seconds. The reset on the UV9GX now also includes all NOAA “All Hazards” Weather Emergency channels and a few other useful emergency frequencies. Note that performing this RESET will wipe all pre-programed SHTF channels, so make sure you have a backup of the programing before resetting the radio.

The KG-UV9GX operating range is as good or better than any other affordable Commercial/Ham or GMRS radio, even with its included high-gain stock flexible antenna, which is better than most radios in this price range (and above). As well, with an after-market high-gain duck, whip, telescoping, roll-up, mobile mag-mount or base station antenna, you will see a significantly improved talk range, even when communicating with another stock handheld. Using the Wouxun KG-UV9GX GMRS with a repeater will greatly extend your potential operating range, even as far as 100+ miles.

In addition, the UV9GX features simultaneous dual-receiver scanning, 10 scanning groups, and improved “scan-advance” functionality over previous 9-Series models (first introduced with the UV9G PRO), turning the KG-UV9GX into a powerful portable communication device & scanner, especially with its full legal transmit power, wide 7-band receive range, NOAA WX Weather Rx, FM Broadcast Radio Rx, and a full host of Wouxun UV9-Series compatible accessories (available separately).

Check out all of the UV9GX GMRS accessories, such as the highly-tuned GMRS antenna options from Smiley Antenna.

Product Highlights

FCC Certified GMRS Radio, Repeater Capable & IP55
Great for personal recreation, SHTF (S#it Hits The Fan) survival prepping, business, and emergency EmComm communications for NNW (National Neighborhood Watch), CERT, REACT, GA (Guardian Angels) & EARS (Emergency Assistance Radio Syndicate organized by BetterSafeRadio in Long Beach, CA) municipal and private neighborhood safety groups. Full 5+ Watts (ERP) of transmit power on UHF (limited to 0.5 W on the 467 MHz interstitial channels, as required by FCC Part 95E) for maximum range and impressive GMRS simplex & repeater performance, with IP55 (dust & water jets resistant) rating for outdoor use. Comes pre-programed for SHTF Prepping by default!

True Dual Receive, Dual-Scanning & Broadcast FM Radio
Allows monitoring two frequencies (in the VFO) or memory channels simultaneously (V+V, U+U, V+U or U+V) in TDR (True Dual Receive) mode. You can also use a “Dual-Watch” mode by setting the second “sub-receiver” to mute when first “main receiver” is actively receiving a signal. And, you can even scan frequencies or channels on both receivers simultaneously or use the Priority Scan feature to always scan a user-defined priority channel in the background, so you never miss a call. Great for scanning emergency channels while monitoring a “home” GMRS channel, or even listening to a Broadcast FM Radio station while monitoring GMRS or any other frequency or channel. A single receiver mode is also available for simplified or dedicated operations.

999 Channels, 3 Power Levels, Dual-PTT, VFO & FPP
Easily program up to 999 regular VHF/UHF channel memories with 8-character alpha-numeric tags, and 20 Broadcast FM Radio station memories (1019 channels total). A traditional FPP (Front Panel Programable) Dual-VFO mode allows you to enter any two frequencies in the radio’s wide RX range with the keypad at the same time. There are 3 programable power levels for operating compatibility and flexibility (UHF: 5+/2/0.5 W – Custom calibrated for GMRS simplex & repeater operation at a center of 465 MHz). There’s even a handy Bright LED Safety Flashlight and a Stopwatch feature built-in – great for emergencies, recreation & sporting events.

Pro Features & Ample 1 Year Warranty!
The UV9GX is an easy to operate radio with its compact size, simple menu system and Front Panel Programing. It includes a kitchen-sink list of advanced features never before contained in a single, high-end GMRS radio, at any price (see Key Features above) – The Wouxun KG-UV9GX is the GMRS radio you will EDC (Every Day Carry) or Bug-Out with! Each radio includes an extended-capacity 3200 mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery (provides 24+ hours of operation between charges with battery-saver mode; a thinner 2000 mAh battery pack is available separately), 2-4 hour desk charger, a flexible, removable dual-band 8″ high-gain GMRS-Tuned SMA-Male rubber duck antenna for long range comms., a sturdy belt clip with metal screws and threads, a wrist strap, a New English Quick-Start manual (also downloadable as a PDF on this page). The original English user manual (from the UV9P) can also be downloaded on this page. Backed with an impressive manufacturer 1 year limited warranty (on radio, 6 months on battery, charger and accessories), the Wouxun KG-UV9GX is the GMRS radio you always wanted!

Note: Transmitting on the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) requires a license (currently $35 for 10 years and good for your entire immediate family – typically takes only a couple days to obtain online from the FCC). This radio is not “type-accepted” for transmitting on other bands such as Amateur/HAM, MURS, MMS, LMR, etc. The original KG-UV9P & new upgraded UV9PX radios are available for Amateur/Ham operation (or MARS/CAP & exempt GOV unlocked uses).

*IMPORTANT: This radio is meant for personal or business use by licensed GMRS operators during normal or emergency “SHTF” (S#it Hits The Fan) situations. Although this radio comes pre-programed for Part 95E compliance with transmit locked to only the GMRS band, you are ultimately and solely responsible for operating this device in compliance with FCC licensing and regulations, regardless of how it comes programed. For EmComm use, consult your COML or group communications coordinator regarding device compliance before any official public service operation. The free downloadable customer programing software made available for this radio by the manufacturer is for use by authorized service technicians or GMRS license holders to reprogram the radios for transmit on GMRS or receive-only on any other radio service (excluding cellular service). We are not responsible for any harm or loss caused by the use or misuse of this device. Please let us know if you have any compliance questions before purchasing.

9 reviews for Wouxun KG-UV9GX GMRS Two-Way Radio & SHTF Scanner

  1. Norm Waldroop (verified owner)

    Nice little HT.

It’s good for my intended use mostly indoors in case of SHTF. Glad I bought it, but it’s not perfect…

PROs: Output power is advertised as “5+ watts”, but mine only measures around 4 watts max, total forward plus reflected power. (In fairness, my meter is at the low edge of its 1-100W operating range; accuracy might not be great there.) Having said that, I’m surprised with its range. With a Nagoya NA-771G antenna, I can talk on my local repeater (unknown antenna elevation up a 100’ MOL tower) from 12 miles. At that distance, radio checks say my TX is “good” and “easily readable”, but with some static.

[BSR NOTE: GMRS radios are rated in ERP (Effective Radiated Power) per the FCC, and as the antenna has some gain, your ERP rating will be higher than the direct PEP (Peak Envelope Power) output. Indeed, there’s also a good chance your meter is off by a Watt or more, as the radio usually puts out an average of 5.35 Watts PEP. The performance difference of a Watt or so is minuscule on UHF anyway, so this really is splitting hairs in either case. 🙂 ]

It’s very miserly with power. I can scan all day (but…see below) on a fraction of battery capacity.

I’m surprised how small it is!

The SHTF pre-programming makes up for the cons.

CONS: Number 1 problem: the screen is VERY dim even on the brightest setting. Outside in bright sun, this isn’t a cover-the-screen-with-your-cupped-hand dim, it’s a throw-a-towel-over-your-head dim.

[BSR NOTE: This is the case with most color TFT displays, but I am working on improving this in a future version.]

The radio comes with 4 pages (two loose sheets of paper front and back) of a more-or-less quick start guide, but not a detailed manual. Users familiar with HTs will have no problem. Newbies like myself will need some background from other sources (what are RX-CTC, TX-CTC, RX-DCS, TX-DCS, OFFSET, PTT-ID, ANI-ID, RING, S-TONE, etc, etc?)

[BSR NOTE: You can download the parent radio’s (KG-UV9P) full manual from the product page, which is all that Wouxun offers.]

The radio turns itself off after some period of non-use, even while scanning. It’s somewhere around 1 or 1.5 hours, but I don’t know the exact time because you don’t know when it happens. There is no beep, flashing LED or other prior/post warning and I see no way to disable that…feature. To reset, the radio must be turned off and back on. That’s not a good thing for those hiking, skiing, shopping, bike riding, etc. with others they are trying to stay in contact with.

[BSR NOTE: This is the APO (Auto Power-Off) feature, which is set to a default of 120 minutes when shipped. You can simply increase or turn this feature off in the radio’s Function Menu if desired. See the list of Menu Functions in the Quick-Start Guide for the Menu # and options.]

Menu item 1 allows screen blanking to be turned off so that the screen is always on, but the button backlights are together with the screen. If the screen is always on, the buttons are, too. It would be useful to have a power save option that leaves the screen on while the buttons are off.

[BSR NOTE: The display backlight takes way more power to stay lit than the keypad backlight, so such a feature would make an infinitesimal difference in battery life but would add complexity of operation and there’s n more MCU memory left to add any more functions to this radio platform without removing something else.]

The “Stealth” screen option is dark red characters over a black screen, I guess for those running around in the dark trying not to be seen. However, the green receive LED is very bright in all screen modes and would kind of defeat the purpose. 🙂

[BSR NOTE: Most people either use a Sharpie or a small piece of black paper tape to “cover” the status LEDs.]

I’ve yet to figure out how to tone scan. Menu 51 SCN-CD has two options: CTCSS and DCS. If you select one, you are exited from the menu, and then….nothing. No help from the quick start guide.

[BSR NOTE: Actually, the Function Menu list in the Quick-Start Guide mentions using the feature “on active signals,” which is how the feature works, so engage the feature when there’s an active signal to search for a CTCSS tone or DCS code.]

The dust flap over the headphone/mic port folds over for headphone attachment, but doesn’t want to stay closed afterward. Better to remove the flap, but the little screw isn’t captive and is easily dropped and lost.

[BSR NOTE: If you press the area over the lower audio jack hole, and then rock your thumb up to press the area over the upper audio jack hole, the audio jack cover should stay in unless you have severely deformed/worn it.]

Reception in the RX-only bands isn’t quite as clear as it could be. I’m only two miles from the outer marker on the local ILS. Aircraft transmissions are fuzzier than they should be so close, as is the local NOAA weather broadcast and all FM reception.

[BSR NOTE: The AM Air Band RX does have slightly less sensitivity as the normal UV bands. You might consider using an after-market antenna tuned better for the Air Band to increase the RX. Your NOAA reception should be almost as good as 2m band RX, and FM Broadcast RX should be nearly as good also. If not, you may have a faulty receiver. Please contact me if you would like to troubleshoot this.]

Even some cheap competitor HTs have a USB-C or round plug charging option for use in a car. This unit has to be in the charging cradle. The optional cigarette lighter plug with the big adapter that fits in the battery slot costs extra and is not optimum.

[BSR NOTE: This is an older radio line (which is why it’s so stable and revered) that came out before USB-C existed. There is however a new BLO-033 USB-C chargeable battery available for all UV9-Series radios, which you can purchase as a spare, or have swapped in instead of the standard BLO-012 with your radio (if requested during checkout or via email before an order is processed). The BLO-033 can be charged directly via USB-C or in the desk charger included with the radio.]

    What is the scan rate?
    Thanks

    >> Hi Lance, the scan rate on the GX (and PX) is about 8 channels per second.

Cheers and thanks for your interest!

Hands down the best quality GMRS handheld:

Have been using this radio for a month or two now, it is hands down the best quality GMRS handheld you will probably find out there. Casing feels and looks very durable. I really wish there was an IP67 variant of this radio. [ED. We’re working on it! 🙂 ]

Some little but important details I liked are the antenna hole is big enough to fit 771 series antennas that usually have big wide bases. Also the roger beep being disabled for repeaters is nice because I generally like having the RB on simplex (for family/friends ease of communication) but don’t really need it for repeater use.

    I love the radio:
I recently received my new Wouxun KG-UV9GX. I originally ordered the KG-UV9G Pro but it was backordered. Mark was able to work with me to get the upgrade to the KG-UV9GX which was available. (Thanks again Mark) I love the radio. It does exactly what I need it to do for my communications. I have since worked with Mark again on ordering some accessories and he has been the best in terms of customer service. I will definitely be buying more equipment from BetterSafeRadio to meet my GMRS radio needs in the future.

    The Best Radio:
Finally, today I got the best radio that is currently on the market. Of course I’m talking about the Wouxun KG-UV9GX from BetterSafeRadio. Can’t wait to program and use.

You won’t go wrong if you order. If you really want to be a GMRS user… KG-UV9GX that’s so good and the best radio.

Thank you very much Mark for being patient with me. Thank you once again, I hope we will cooperate in the future.

    Radio is great:
I ordered a radio and messed up the order in a couple ways. After discussing with Mark we came up with a great solution and I’m good to go. Customer service was great, radio is great. Wish he had even more radios to sell me. 🙂

This radio is a HOMERUN hit:
Easily received signals from the transmissions in my area, it is smaller than I expected (good thing), the speaker is loud AF. Can’t wait to explore it’s potential. A1 purchase……

    Install the wrist strap…..trust me.

    Fantastic Radios:
My son and I received our new KG-UV9GX & KG-UV9PX’s and these are fantastic radios. I have much more expensive and supposedly better Japanese radios that I leave at home and use my Wouxun’s as my daily radios. I have the prior versions of these radios and the new X versions make these already fantastic radios even better. I also can’t say enough good things about Mark’s service at Better Safe Radio. He’s been so accommodating and helpful with my orders and service after the sale. Thanks for the great products and service Mark!

    I LOVE THIS RADIO:
Solid design, powerful, works like a charm. Preprogrammed which is amazing to me since most companies do not do that. All I can say is that is unit is well worth the money.
