The Wouxun KG-UV9PX is a firmware-modified & HAM-calibrated version of the revered and trusted Wouxun KG-UV9P & Wouxun KG-UV9D Plus amateur radios, co-designed by Mark Lindsey (K6LED) and sold exclusively by BetterSafeRadio. The Wouxun 9-Series radios are known for their quality double-conversion superheterodyne receivers, stable performance & pro features, while remaining easy to use, even for beginners. The new UV9PX is functionally similar to other 9-Series radios, with several refinements and additions, making it an even better value.

If you like the clarity and reliability of other Wouxun radios, then you’ll love the upgraded functionality, features, and the true dual superheterodyne receivers on the UV9PX for normal everyday HAM use, as well as for emergency EmComm and SHTF uses.

The Wouxun KG-UV9PX works with the RT Systems UV9P Advanced Programming Software & Cable Kit, and the 9PX will accept any program from the UV9GX, UV9G PRO, UV9D Plus or UV9P (but with Tx locked to HAM).

The optional BLO-033 2200 mAh USB-C re-chargeable battery is also compatible with the UV9PX. The optional slimmer BLO-010 2000 mAh battery pack from the original UV9D & UV9D (Plus) is also compatible with the UV9PX for a lighter, thinner body. Check out all of the Wouxun 9-Series Accessories, which are all interchangeable.

Note: The UV9PX can be RESET by a keypad Menu option. Doing so will return the radio to a standard 29-channel HAM configuration (with other useful channels such as all NOAA WX, Marine Emergency, Air Emergency & Ham ISS Freqs.) and will erase all of the other pre-programed SHTF channels and extra HAM channels. Please save a backup your radio codeplug (programing file) using the free Wouxun factory software and the “red” Wouxun USB cable (sold separately), CHIRP, or the RT Systems Advanced Programing Software & USB Cable Kit (sold separately) in case you ever unintentionally RESET the radio. If you’ve accidentally RESET your radio, please see the restoration options on my Custom Radio Programing Services page.

Note: Transmitting on the ARS (Amateur Radio Service) requires a test & license (currently $35 for 10 years and typically takes only a few days to obtain your HAM license from the FCC).

Shipping Note: Due to USPS restrictions, orders with 3 or more Li-ion battery packs in a box must be sent by Ground Advantage surface transport. Packages with batteries (with or without a radio) weighing over 5 pounds will need to be split up into multiple shipments, which may require an additional shipping fee. I will contact you about this if necessary. Contact me if you have any questions. Unfortunately, I’m not shipping internationally at this time (US-based mail forwarding services such as Shippsy.com Stackry.com are fine though). Contact me if you have any questions.

Detailed Description

The BSR-Exclusive Wouxun KG-UV9PX is a 999 channel programable dual-band handheld analog double-conversion superheterodyne FM Amateur/HAM two-way radio transceiver with wide 7-band receive range, TDR (true dual receive), full-duplex, repeater capability (with CTCSS/DCS split-tones and non-standard PL tones), and pro features ideal for individuals, scouts, SHTF preppers, survivalists, over landers, truckers, or EmComm emergency communication groups. It has 2.5 kHz tuning steps and comes custom pre-programed with 859 channels for HAM + SHTF* (ships with Tx locked to HAM bands for Part 97 compliance), for dual-use HAM transceiver & analog AM/FM scanner operation. User programable with free downloadable Wouxun programing software (link above – requires optional USB cable & x86 Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or 11, or a Mac running Parallels), free open-source CHIRP programing software, or the RT Systems UV9D Advanced Programing Software & USB Cable Kit.

With a high 8+ Watts of power and a simplex/talk-around range of 2 to 7+ miles (much more when used with a repeater or at optimal elevations with minimal line-of-sight obstructions), the KG-UV9PX provides reliable amateur or emergency radio communications for personal disaster preparedness, scouting, prepping, survival, search & rescue, off-roading, trekking, hiking, Neighborhood Watch, ARES, RACES, SkyWarn, AMSAT, REACT, CERT, Guardian Angels & EARS groups to keep in touch when other methods of communication break down. IP55 rated, FCC Part 97 Compliant & Part 15B FCC Certified. The UV9PX is custom power calibrated for US HAM simplex & repeater use (at a 146 & 440 MHz centers) and transmits on all 2 meter & 70 centimeter amateur radio frequencies.

The UV9PX comes pre-programed with many ready-to-use Ham simplex channels. You can easily change the PL Tones (or DCS Codes) from the front panel on any of these pre-programed channels. This is handy when you want to find a talk-in frequency or quickly jump to an open simplex frequency without having to re-program on the fly every time. The 9pX can be easily field programed via the front panel or you can use a variety of software options to add as many Ham (or other) channels (simplex or repeater) as you desire. Or, turn the radio into an all-receive scanner – It’s totally up to you!

Note that when the UV9PX is reset using the [MENU_61 “RESET”] function, the radio will reset to a default configuration of 29 HAM (Call + several other common simplex freqs.) + NOAA/MMS/AIR/ISS channels, which you can then customize the PL Tones on as desired. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation and need to restore basic functionality quickly, this reset feature will get you there in a few seconds. The reset on the UV9PX now also includes all NOAA “All Hazards” Weather Emergency channels and a few other useful emergency frequencies. Note that performing this RESET will wipe all pre-programed SHTF channels, so make sure you have a backup of the programing before resetting the radio.

The Wouxun KG-UV9PX operating range is as good or better than any other affordable Commercial/Ham or GMRS radio, even with its included high-gain stock flexible antenna, which is better than most radios in this price range (and above). As well, with an after-market high-gain duck, whip, telescoping, emergency roll-up J-pole, mobile mag-mount or base station antenna, you will see a significantly improved talk range, even when communicating with another stock handheld. Using the Wouxun KG-UV9PX with a repeater will greatly extend your potential operating range, even as far as 100+ miles.

In addition, the UV9PX features simultaneous dual-receiver scanning, 10 scanning groups, and improved “scan-advance” functionality over previous 9-Series models (first introduced with the UV9G PRO GMRS radio), turning the KG-UV9PX into a powerful portable analog communication device & scanner, especially with its high transmit power, wide 7-band receive range, NOAA WX Weather Rx, FM Broadcast Radio Rx, and a full host of Wouxun UV9-Series compatible accessories (available separately).

Check out all of the UV9PX 9-Series accessories, such as the highly-tuned HAM antenna options from Smiley Antenna.

15 reviews for Wouxun KG-UV9PX HAM Two-Way Radio & SHTF Scanner

  1. Nick (verified owner)

This is the new best HT I own. Recently, I wrote a review for my KG-UV9G PRO GMRS stating the same thing. However, now that I’ve received this PX Ham model, it takes the cake. Mind you it’s not better by a wide margin but most aspects of the radio do seem to perform slightly better and I haven’t found aspects that are worse. I was going to return the UV9G PRO radio, but when I requested to start the return process, Mark’s (the site owner) prompt and accommodating response made me decide to spare him the hassle/expense and just keep it as a very good backup radio. [BSR: Thanks Nick!]

Lastly, it does transmit over 5 Watts on UHF frequencies and one could use CHIRP to easily expand transmission frequency range up to 468 MHz. However, no licensed radio user would condone such a thing, of course, because the FCC doesn’t allow transmitting with this radio outside of its stock frequency ranges except if required to in a life threatening emergency. It also risks voiding the warranty and bricking the radio.

If you were to buy a similar radio from one of the big name brands, it would easily cost double this amount. The only feature I wish this radio had was the ability to program NOAA SAME codes. With that said, it’s still a wonderful radio. I bought a few KG805G’s a while back for the family, and while those are o.k. radios, you can feel the difference in quality with this radio. I would definitely recommend this radio to anyone who it looking for a “do-it-all” analog HT.

P.S. If you do any modifications, (we won’t go into detail here), be aware that there are frequency hard limits that if hit, will reset the radio to factory settings. I won’t say exactly what these limits are, but if you back the frequency off 1-2 MHz at a time, from the maximum allowed, you will easily find these limits. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you probably shouldn’t be modding the radio in the first place. Moral of the story is, save a backup .img and CSV of the radio, so you don’t have to call Mark crying that you deleted all the preloaded frequencies.

Mark was also a pleasure to deal with. In today’s day and age, everyone expects instant gratification. I went into this knowing BSR is a “One-Man-Show”, but had I not known this already, I would have never suspected it wasn’t a huge operation. Mark answered every single question, I had, by the end of the day, and most of the time, within a few minutes. Even on weekends!

If you’ve done your research and are aware of what this radio can and cannot do, you won’t be disappointed! [BSR: Thanks so much for this detailed review and your kind comments Dylan, I really appreciate it. Cheers! -Mark]

The KG-UV9PX is a solid choice for a robust dual band radio. I’ll go over a few key points I have noticed over my time with this HT.

    1. Audio Quality – I’ve transmitted on a number of repeaters with this unit and have been told how clear the microphone is; often assumed to be a much more expensive radio. Likewise the speaker in this unit is impressively clear as well. I had no issues hearing other transmissions.

    2. Power Output – I clocked this thing at around 7.5 to 8 watts output on the high setting on both 2m and 70cm bands. While there is little difference between 5 watts and 8 watts to make a meaningful difference, it does give you that little bit more to hit those hard to reach repeaters.

    3. Battery Life – The 3200mAh battery in this thing will certainly last you all day of transmitting and receiving; more if you are only receiving (a lot more). Knock it down to low power if you can and I can see this thing lasting almost a whole week.

    4. Build Quality – The transceiver is sturdy and feels solid in the hand. The plastics used don’t feel thin or cheap. The buttons are big enough for the largest of sausage fingers to operate without taking up too much real-estate. The screen is easily readable while showing the minimal amount of information as to not clutter up the screen. The screen is hard to see in direct sunlight without shading, however.

    5. Transmission Range – This transceiver has just as many FARS as any other transceiver in this category. The supplied rubber duck antenna performs flawlessly so upgrading the antenna is not necessary if you don’t want to.

Overall I recommend this radio to anyone who wants to transmit on 2m/70cm, hit satellite repeaters, or just scan the bands.

[BSR: Thanks so much for this detailed review Stephen, I really appreciate it. Cheers and Be Safe!]

If you are looking for a high-quality portable radio with great customer service, I would highly recommend:

I am taking my tech test this week. The radio was suggested by numerous people. I have not transmitted yet (that is a test question) but have been able to listen to multiple channels. Mark (the owner) has been very responsive. It is clear that the radio has much more capabilities than I do. The local ham club said they would help me as I went along. The radio is compact, well made and does come with instructions. I initially took the bait of the other vendors selling an “emergency radio.” It took a while for me to navigate the reality of those advertisements but buying an “emergency radio” to store in a faraday bag to call for help when needed is like buying a scalpel and a retractor and keeping it in your home in case you need to do an emergency appendectomy. (I am a cardiologist, and I could not do that.) In that case, having a radio to listen for information is the main value.

I have read numerous books in preparation for the HAM test. It is clear that this radio probably has more functionality than most of new technician class users. My sense is that this will meet all of my immediate needs and most likely long-term needs unless I advance, and I will need definitely need more experience to maximize all of its functions. If you are looking for a high-quality portable radio with great customer service, I would highly recommend.

    Easily worth the money:
I’ve had my Wouxun KG-UV9PX for about a year now and it has managed to outperform my expectations–which were high to begin with. It’s proven to be rugged, durable, and to have fantastic range, super clear reception, and amazing battery life. The custom BSR manual for this radio is concise and very easy to follow. Many of the preset channels are broadly useful, though I ended up programming a number of channels specific to my needs and region. Mark at BSR was super responsive to questions I had concerning further modifications and peripheral equipment. He’s knowledgable, patient, and goes out of his way to be helpful. I couldn’t be happier with this purchase, and can’t recommend it highly enough. Easily worth the money.

[Ed. Thanks so much for this great review, I really appreciate it!]

Wouxun UV9PX – This radio is just awesome!
As a newbie in the radio community I searched lots of different radios and this one was the winner. I’m still learning all the bells and whistles the UV9PX has to offer but that is good because it will keep me busy. I needed a radio for emergencies and also to practice the hobby and I got it.
In a nutshell, a smooth transaction, fast delivery and awesome product! Can’t get any better!

    Great radio:
This thing can easily hit repeaters twice as far as my UV5R could with much better reception which makes sense since it has twice the output wattage. The stock antenna works better than my UV5R with a Nagoya 771 which is great. I’ve gotten loud and clear reports on my signal from a repeater 30 miles away (flat terrain). Having true dual receive [TDR] is great for monitoring a second channel and not missing anything plus dual-PTT makes it easier to respond to that second channel. I live in an urban area and the superheterodyne receiver doesn’t pick up other signals from different frequencies like my cheaper GMRS and Baofeng radios do. I was able to quickly backup my radio and program it using Chirp and the Wouxun software which was great.

    Very well built:
I recently purchased the Wouxun KG-UV9PX and really enjoying it! With Mark’s help at BetterSafeRadio I was able to get past a few new user hurdles. The radio is small enough to carry around comfortably yet large enough to be useable. Very well built and very well supported by BetterSafeRadio! Great customer service!!! Waiting for my new GMRS radio that I know I will enjoy just as well!

    So loving my new radio:
The UV9PX works great – added my local repeaters for the Philadelphia and Jersey Shore area and was able to hit several nearby. The RT Systems Advanced Programming Software and USB Cable Kit for the Wouxun KG-UV9P was very easy to use.

    Customer Service – Excellent!
I purchased a Wouxun UV9PX, and as I was attempting to correct my programing errors, I accidently performed a “RESET ALL” function. In addition to erasing my errors, I managed to erase all the BetterSafeRadio (“BSR”) channels (DO NOT perform a “MENU 61_RESET | ALL”). I reached out to Mr. Mark Lindsey – K6LED / WQXR567 and received a prompt response with technical advice on options for reloading the BSR proprietary channels.

For my specific needs, Mr. Lindsey advised purchase of the RPS-KGUV9P-USB License for the RT Systems Advanced Programming Software and USB Cable Kit for the Wouxun KG-UV9P. In addition, I purchased the BSR proprietary and copyrighted “Codeplug” that allows for reloading of the BSR HAM + SHTF channels. Mr. Lindsey was once again (this is my second purchase) prompt in providing technical advice related to accessories that would ensure my satisfaction with the Wouxun UV9PX, and be a responsive member to the needs of my community through the Lake Oswego Amateur Radio Emergency Service (“LOARES”).

    Thank you Mr. Lindsey!

P.S. I used the Wouxun UV9PX on a LOARES exercise this past weekend, and I’m very happy with its performance!

More stations than my Yaesu HT!
Side by side with the same antennas my KG-UV9GX was picking up more stations than my Yaesu HT! Top that off with a great display and 8 Watts transmit power! Mark is also a gentleman and takes care of you! Thank you!

I’d buy this again many times over:
This is the most versatile dual-band (non-digital) HT I’ve owned. It’s got a great battery and excellent TX/RX. I’m able to hit all local repeaters within 60-70 miles of my home using this radio and a Nagoya 771 dual band antenna. I’d buy this again many times over. Great radio!

    Highly Recommend:
Got my KG-UV9PX earlier in the week and have been working on programming with the factory, as well as RT Systems. Both provide a great experience. The radio itself feels heavy duty when compared to my ICOM ID-52a Plus2 [Ed. Note: a $650 radio]. Screen looks nice, but using the HT is a different experience since I only have experience with the ICOM. Definitely has some cool features, hits everything I could hit, and with the extended band coverage I am able to scan for all sorts of extra things I couldn’t hear before.

Last but not least, I’ve burdened Mark with a bunch of emails throughout my shopping process and he’s always been polite, quick to reply, and shared a wealth of information.
Would highly recommend his service and equipment to anyone!

    Very happy with it:
Just got it today. Very happy with it. I was able to hit the repeater 25 miles away. Programming is easy with CHIRP. Screen looks good. Unit feels solid and battery locks on tight. Nice, clear reception. Mark’s customer service is top notch.

    Fantastic Radios:
My son and I received our new KG-UV9GX & KG-UV9PX’s and these are fantastic radios. I have much more expensive and supposedly better Japanese radios that I leave at home and use my Wouxun’s as my daily radios. I have the prior versions of these radios and the new X versions make these already fantastic radios even better. I also can’t say enough good things about Mark’s service at Better Safe Radio. He’s been so accommodating and helpful with my orders and service after the sale. Thanks for the great products and service Mark!
