Key Description
The Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ is the most recent GMRS firmware and hardware modification of the well-known and highly regarded Wouxun UV9-Series radio line, which includes the Wouxun KG-UV9GX/UV9PX/UV9P/UV9D Mate/UV9D Plus+, and UV9D (Plus) GMRS and amateur radios. This model was co-designed by Mark Lindsey (K6LED) and is exclusively distributed by BetterSafeRadio.
The Wouxun 9-Series radios are renowned for their exceptional double-conversion superheterodyne receivers, delivering competitive performance in comparison to some of the more expensive Japanese radios available in the market. From everyday recreational or hobby use to emergency EmComm and SHTF events, this radio delivers unwavering performance, reliability, and a comprehensive suite of professional features, all while maintaining an intuitive and user-friendly interface, even for beginners.
The Wouxun UV9GX+ stands out as the most functional and cost-effective model within the entire line of Wouxun GMRS radios, offering similar RF performance to other models while incorporating several hardware and feature enhancements and additions over other UV9-Series radios. The UV9GX+ will accept most programing codeplugs from other UV9-Series radios and is programmatically identical to the UV9GX.

The BetterSafeRadio-Exclusive Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ is a 999 channel 5.5 Watt programable handheld analog double-conversion superheterodyne FM GMRS two-way radio transceiver. It features a wide 7-band receive range, TDR (true dual receive), full-duplex, repeater capability (with CTCSS/DCS split-tones and non-standard PL tones), and pro features ideal for individual hobbyists, families, scouts, SHTF preppers, survivalists, overlanders, 4X4 off-roading enthusiasts, drivers, delivery providers, long-haul truckers, weather chasers, SKYWARN trackers, scanner enthusiasts, and EmComm emergency communications operators. It includes 2.5 kHz tuning steps and comes custom pre-programed with 906 channels for GMRS + SHTF* (ships with Tx locked to GMRS bands for Part 95E compliance), for dual-use GMRS transceiver & analog AM/FM scanner operation. It’s user programable with free downloadable Wouxun programing software (download CPS below – requires optional PCO-009 USB Programing Cable & x86 Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or 11, or a Mac running Parallels), free open-source CHIRP programing software, or the RT Systems UV9G Advanced Programing Software & USB Cable Kit.
With a full legal limit of 5.5 (ERP) Watts on high power and a simplex/talk-around range of 2 to 7+ miles (35–100+ miles when used with a repeater or at optimal elevations with minimal line-of-sight obstructions), the Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ provides reliable personal or emergency radio communications for family disaster preparedness, scouting troops, prepping, survival, search & rescue, off-roading, trekking, hiking, Neighborhood Watch, REACT, CERT, GA (Guardian Angels) & other groups to keep in touch when other methods of communication break down. IP55 rated, Part 95E & Part 15B FCC Certified. The UV9GX+ is custom power calibrated (unlike some models from other dealers) for US GMRS simplex & repeater use (at 465 MHz band centers) and transmits on all 30 GMRS radio frequencies.
The Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ is built on the same UV9-Series radio platform as the more powerful UV9PX, UV9P & UV9D Mate amateur/HAM radios, giving the UV9GX+ ample transmit headroom – it won’t break a sweat running on high power all the time.
The UV9GX+ comes pre-programed ready-to-use with all GMRS simplex & repeater frequencies (along with several other common radio services (Rx only), and many potentially useful SHTF scanner channels), along with extra repeater banks for additional areas of operation you might travel to, or for dense area with multiple repeaters on the same frequency. There’s also a FRS compatibility bank so you can easily communicate with existing cheap FRS walkie-talkies. You can easily change the PL Tones (or DCS Codes) from the front panel on any of these pre-programed channels. This is handy when you want to find travel assistance, help during an emergency, or quickly jump to an open simplex frequency without having to re-program on the fly every time. The 9GX+ can be easily field programed via the front panel keypad or you can use a variety of software options to add as many GMRS (or other) channels (simplex or repeater) as you desire. Or, turn the radio into an all-receive scanner – It’s totally up to you!
The Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ operating range is as good or better than any other affordable Commercial/Ham or GMRS radio, even with its included high-gain stock flexible antenna, which is better than most radios in this price range (and above). As well, with an after-market high-gain duck, whip, telescoping, emergency roll-up J-pole, mobile mag-mount or base station antenna, you will see a significantly improved talk range, even when communicating with another stock handheld. Using the Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ with a repeater will greatly extend your potential operating range, even as far as 100+ miles.
In addition, the UV9GX+ features simultaneous dual-receiver scanning (of memories or VFOs), 10 user-definable scan groups, and improved “Scan Advance” functionality over previous 9-Series models (first introduced with the UV9G PRO GMRS radio), turning the KG-UV9GX+ into a powerful portable analog communication device & scanner, especially with its high transmit power, wide 7-band receive range, NOAA WX Weather Rx, FM Broadcast Radio Rx, and a full host of Wouxun UV9-Series compatible accessories (available separately). Note that the UV9GX+ can be RESET using the [MENU_61 “RESET”] function. Doing so will return the radio to a standard 44-channel GMRS configuration (with useful channels such as all GMRS Simplex & Repeater frequencies, all NOAA WX Weather, Marine Emergency, AIR Emergency & SAR frequencies) and will erase all of the other pre-programed channels. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation and need to restore basic functionality quickly, this RESET feature will get you there in a few seconds. Please save an initial backup your radio codeplug (programing file) using the free Wouxun CPS (customer programing software) and the “red” Wouxun PCO-009 USB Programing Cable (sold separately), free CHIRP software, or the RT Systems Advanced Programing Software & USB Cable Kit (sold separately) in case you ever unintentionally RESET the radio. Emergency, Safety & Convenience Features
The UV9GX+ incorporates a convenient LED Safety Flashlight with a brighter and more usable/focused beam (only on BetterSafeRadio models). The advanced scanning capabilities include a BetterSafeRadio-designed Scan-Advance feature to quickly move past unwanted signals with a simple key press or knob twist while scanning, and multiple scan review/resume modes. Also unique to this BetterSafeRadio design is the Priority Channel Quick-Jump feature, which allows jumping to a user-defined Priority Channel with a single keypress, even while scanning – You’ll be ready to make an emergency call or tune into your “home, family or group” simplex, repeater or NOAA Weather traffic instantly. The programable Hands-Free VOX feature offers added convenience. The UV9GX+ works great for field SAR (Search & Rescue), base camp, or special event operations. There’s even a Digital Stopwatch feature, useful for emergency situations, recreational activities, and sporting events.
True Dual Receive, Dual-Scanning & Broadcast FM Radio
Allows simultaneous monitoring of two VFO frequencies or memory channels (or one of each) in True Dual Receive (TDR) mode (V+V, U+U, V+U, or U+V). Additionally, you can enable a “Dual-Watch” mode by setting the second “sub-receiver” to mute when the first “MAIN receiver” is actively receiving a signal. You can also simultaneously scan frequencies or channels on both receivers, or utilize the Priority Scan feature to continuously check for activity on a user-defined priority channel in the background, ensuring that you never miss a call – Great for scanning emergency channels while monitoring a “home” repeater or frequency, or even listening to a ballgame, music, talk radio, or emergency information on a Broadcast FM Radio station while monitoring the Prepper/Emergency channel, or any other frequency or channel at the same time. A single receiver mode is also available for simplified or dedicated task-specific operations.

Conveniently store up to 999 VHF/UHF Channel Memories with 8-character alpha-numeric name tags, and 20 additional Broadcast FM Radio station memories (for a total of 1019 channels). The flexible Front Panel Programable (FPP) Dual-VFO mode enables direct entry of any two frequencies within the radio’s extensive receive range via the keypad. Each Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ color-printed gift box (see images above, ships in UV9GX box but says UV9GX+ on label) includes an Extended Capacity BLO-033 2200 mAh (16.28 Wh) USB-C Chargeable Li-ion Battery for 22+ Hours of Operation between charges with battery-saver mode enabled, and a compact USB-C AC Smart Charger/Adapter & Anker 6′ Braided USB-C to C Charging Cable. The optional Extra Capacity BLO-012 3200 mAh Li-ion Battery and the original thinner High Capacity BLO-010 2000 mAh Li-ion Battery are available separately. Also included is a flexible, removable Dual-Band 8″ High-Gain GMRS-Tuned Tx, Wideband Rx SMA-Male rubber duck antenna for long range comms., a Sturdy Belt Clip with metal screws and threads, a Wouxun-Branded Wrist Strap, and a new English Quick-Start User Manual (downloadable as a PDF below), which includes basic operations and all radio MENU options. Each radio is inspected to make sure all parts are included, is hand-packed with care inside a large waterproof zip bag with ample bubble padding, and shipped via USPS in a discreet, strong corrugated cardboard box with a high 200 lb/sf rating and all appropriate hazmat safety labels, to ensure timely, proper and safe delivery.

License Required: Transmitting on the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) requires a license (no test), which is currently $35 for a 10 year term, covers your entire extended family, and typically takes only a few days to obtain from the FCC. The Wouxun KG-UV9GX+ is not “type-accepted” for normal use on other bands such as ARS (Amateur/HAM), MURS, MMS, LMR, etc. See the new companion KG-UV9PX+ HAM radio or the upgraded KG-916+ GMRS for legal GMRS operation. Per FCC rules, the UV9GX+ can note be unlocked for Tx on other bands.
*IMPORTANT: This radio is meant for personal use by licensed GMRS operators during normal or emergency “SHTF” (S#it Hits The Fan) situations. Although my radios come programed for Part 95E compliance with transmit locked to only the GMRS bands, you are ultimately and solely responsible for operating this device in compliance with FCC licensing and regulations, regardless of how it comes programed. For EmComm use, consult your COML regarding device compliance before any official public service operation.
