The Wouxun KG-UV9G is a firmware-modified & GMRS-calibrated version of the revered and trusted Wouxun KG-UV9P & Wouxun KG-UV9D Plus amateur radios, co-designed by Mark Lindsey (K6LED/WQXR567) and sold exclusively by BetterSafeRadio. The Wouxun 9-Series radios known for their quality double-conversion superheterodyne receivers, performance & pro features, while remaining easy to use, even for beginners. The new 9G GMRS is functionally similar, with a few modified features that are restricted, prohibited or unwanted on the GMRS band, such as the cross-band repeater, power levels, modulation bandwidth, roger beep, and SOS & siren alarms.
If you like the clarity and reliability of the Wouxun KG-805G and KG-905G or the expanded features on the 935G, then you’ll love the massively upgraded functionality, features and the true dual superheterodyne receivers on the UV9G for normal everyday GMRS use, as well as for emergency EmComm and SHTF uses.
The Wouxun KG-UV9G works with the RT Systems UV9G Advanced Programming Software & Cable Kit, and the 9G PRO will accept any program from the UV9GX, UV9D Plus, UV9PX or UV9P (but with Tx locked to GMRS).
The optional slimmer 2000 mAh battery pack from the original UV9D & UV9D Plus is also compatible with the UV9G for a lighter, thinner body. Check out all of the Wouxun 9-Series Accessories, which are all interchangeable.
Note: The UV9G can be RESET by a keypad Menu option. Doing so will return the radio to a standard 30-channel GMRS configuration and will delete all of the other pre-programmed SHTF channels and extra GMRS banks. Please save a backup your radio codeplug (programming file) using the free Wouxun factory software and the “red” Wouxun USB cable (sold separately) or the RT Systems Advanced Programming Software & USB Cable Kit (sold separately) in case you ever unintentionally RESET the radio. Note: Transmitting on the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) requires a “no-test” license (currently $35 for 10 years and good for your entire immediate family – typically takes only a few days to obtain your GMRS license from the FCC).
Shipping Note: Due to USPS restrictions, we are only able to ship 1 extra battery pack per radio and only 2 battery packs total per package via 2-3 Day Priority-Mail air service (so 2 radios, or 1 radio with an extra battery, in each box Priority Mail air shipment). Orders with 3 or more Li-ion battery packs in a box must be sent by Priority-Mail surface transport, which may take longer than the normal 2-3 days. Packages with batteries and accessories (without radios) weighing over 5.5 pounds will need to be split up into multiple shipments. Sometimes the shopping cart doesn’t properly calculate this, but I will contact you if there’s any need for additional shipping on larger/bulk orders. Unfortunately, this GMRS radio is not legal for use in Canada, so I am not able to honor orders that ship to Canada at this time (US-based mail forwarding service are fine). Detailed Description
The BSR-Exclusive Wouxun KG-UV9G is a 999 channel programmable dual-band handheld analog double-conversion superheterodyne FM GMRS two-way radio transceiver with wide 7-band receive range, TDR (true dual receive), repeater capability (with CTCSS/DCS split-tones and non-standard PL tones), and pro features ideal for families, scouts, SHTF preppers, survivalists, over landers, truckers, businesses, or EmComm emergency communication groups. It has 2.5 kHz tuning steps and comes custom pre-programmed with 876 channels for GMRS + SHTF* (ships with Tx locked to GMRS band for Part 95E compliance), for dual-use GMRS transceiver & analog FM scanner operation. User programmable with free downloadable Wouxun programming software (link above – requires optional USB cable & x86 Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or 11, or a Mac running Parallels) or the RT Systems UV9D Advanced Programming Software & USB Cable Kit.
With up to 5.5 Watts of power (on UHF) and a talk-around range of 2 to 7+ miles (much more when used with a GMRS repeater or at optimal elevations with minimal line-of-sight obstructions), the KG-UV9G provides reliable recreational or emergency radio communications for personal disaster preparedness, family outings, scouting, prepping, survival, camping, off-roading, trekking, business operations, Neighborhood Watch, REACT, CERT, Guardian Angels & EARS groups to keep in touch when other methods of communication break down. IP55 rated and Part 95E & 15B FCC Certified. The UV9G is custom power calibrated for GMRS simplex & repeater use (at a 465 MHz center) and transmits on all 30 GMRS frequencies with the proper legal power and modulation bandwidth.
The UV9G comes pre-programmed with 5 ready-to-use banks of GMRS channels, including 1 full GMRS bank (with repeater channels), 3 additional banks of repeater channels, and a full “FRS” bank to better facilitate communicating with FRS and older hybrid FRS/GMRS radios (with PL/privacy tones set). You can easily change the PL/Privacy Tones (or DCS Codes) from the front panel on any of these 76 pre-programmed channels. This is handy when you want to program in all the available repeaters in 4 geographical areas without having to re-program on the fly every time. Due to FCC GMRS and radio firmware restrictions, the repeater direction and offset features can’t be programmed from the front panel, which is why I provide the 4 pre-programmed repeater banks. However, the 9G can be easily re-programmed via software to add as many GMRS (or other) channels as you desire, or many more repeater banks that you can then customize on the fly. You can also copy any existing repeater channel and write to to another memory channel, then change your PL tones, creating as many new repeater channels as you wish, in the field. You could use all 999 channels to program 124 banks of all 8 repeater channels, if you wanted to. Or, turn the radio into an all-receive scanner. It’s totally up to you!
Note that when the UV9G is reset using the [MENU_61 “RESET”] function, the radio will reset to a default configuration of all 30 GMRS channels, including the 8 repeater channels, which you can then customize the PL/Privacy Tones on as desired. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation and need to restore basic GMRS functionality quickly, this reset feature will get you there in a few seconds. Note that performing this RESET will wipe all pre-programmed SHTF channels, so make sure you have a backup of the programming before resetting the radio.
The KG-UV9G operating range is as good or better than any other affordable Commercial/Ham or GMRS radio, even with its included high-gain stock flexible antenna, which is better than most radios in this price range (and above). As well, with an after-market high-gain duck, whip, telescoping, roll-up, mobile mag-mount or base station antenna, you will see a significantly improved talk range, even when communicating with another stock handheld. Using the Wouxun KG-UV9G PRO GMRS with a repeater will greatly extend your potential operating range, even as far as 100+ miles.

True Dual Receive, Dual-Scanning & Broadcast FM Radio
Allows monitoring two frequencies (in the VFO) or memory channels simultaneously (V+V, U+U, V+U or U+V) in TDR (True Dual Receive) mode. You can also use a “Dual-Watch” mode by setting the second “sub-receiver” to mute when first “main receiver” is actively receiving a signal. And, you can even scan frequencies or channels on both receivers simultaneously or use the Priority Scan feature to always scan a user-defined priority channel in the background, so you never miss a call. Great for scanning emergency channels while monitoring a “home” GMRS channel, or even listening to a Broadcast FM Radio station while monitoring GMRS or any other frequency or channel. My First Radio – Wouxun KG-UV9G Pro!
I ordered the radio and misc. items at the end of October and at that time I knew it was looking like 4 weeks before I would receive it. It took a little closer to 5, but the holiday was in there so no problem.
The radio arrived in perfect condition and right out of the box it worked GREAT. I was able to reach between 4 and 5 miles with the Smiley Antenna Super Stick. Excellent!
Then I tried to make some changes on it and yup, I didn’t make the back up and I reset the radio. So I emailed Mark and told him what I had done and right away he was there for me. We discussed my best options to get the SHTF programming back and within a couple days, I had my radio programming back and the radio is again working great.
I cannot say enough about Mark and his great help with my problem. He is quick with emails and the right options for any problem. It is very evident to me, that he truly stands behind what he sells and will be there for any customer with problems, questions or other needs for their radio experience.
Being that I am new to GMRS and this being my first experience with buying a radio, if this is what I have to look forward to in my new hobby, I believe that it’s going to be a lot of fun.

It’s an amazing radio to have.
6 weeks but sort of worth it… This is my favorite handheld GMRS radio. The features, superheterodyne glory and SHTF programming make it a very flexible product and the Air Bands are hooray! I have the LITE version also. … features features features. It’s an amazing radio to have. The ability to scan other frequencies makes it even better.
This radio is difficult to obtain due to high demand, holiday shipping delays and global supply chain problems. Patience is key for sure. If you ordered more than just the radio, like accessories and such, the whole package is delayed, I assume, to save on shipping costs. I could have used the accessories while I waited. Patience. So much patience.
The wait times stated on the website appear to be not quite as accurate in my case. The 3-4 week backorder time really translated into 6 weeks from order to arrival. Remember to have patience when ordering in this wonky pandemic climate. Perhaps not bottlenecking backorder delays to “3-4 weeks” and adding “up to six week delays are possible” would be better?

Honestly, I am usually hesitant in pursuing a back ordering process. My reference was from “NotaRubicon Productions” for the Wouxun KG-UV9G PRO GMRS wide band radio with its long resume of features. What gave me confidence in finally placing the order was from Mark’s…personalized touch.
The speed and detail in his replies to my original questions was very reassuring…so I took the plunge and ordered his customized radio (that he pre-programmed). It took a little over 5 weeks to receive and during the waiting period he responded extremely quickly to questions I had along the way. Bottom line: I am very happy with the radio and its capabilities and with Mark’s customized programing and pre/post purchase quality service!

Got my KG-UV9G with the Smiley Slim Duck antenna and the USB charger adapter cable. I’ve had a lot of time to play around with it running around scanning, hitting some repeaters and messing with the programming. Everything operates great.
It really does punch through and receive well vs the cheaper SOC type radios (which is just about every other one). In my urban setting I’m getting great if not surprisingly good reports of signal quality and strength. Recently I was talking 25+ miles North of a repeater in South Dallas and the signal quality was impressive even with the urban clutter and downtown district directly between us. I’m even used to the menus and the keyboard layout now (The Wouxun Way). It’s definitely my favorite radio and with the RX on all those other bands it blows the doors off any GMRS handheld you can get now.

I love this thing! I really like this radio. I did have an issue with the programming software (64-bit). Long story short, my 64-bit Windows 10 has to use the 32-bit programming software. I did not discover this on my own. I dropped a message to BSR via their Contact link and 15 minutes later, I say (type) again, 15 minutes later Mark sent me an e-mail explaining about some folks with Win10 have to use the 32-bit version. 15 dang minutes! Unbelievable!! I was expecting a two day return time.
Anyway, no issues talking with my KG-805G radios, RXing FM stations, RXing NOAA broadcasts. I love this thing!

This radio is awesome and I feel the best GMRS handheld radio on the market. I have tested it quite a bit on repeaters and simplex and by far its receive superheterodyne capability is unmatched to other radios. All in all this radio is actually 6 stars if they had it and BetterSafeRadio has gone out of their way to ensure my satisfaction and Mark (K6LED/WQXR567) has been excellent with responses to my questions about the radio before I even purchased it.

Great radio, great company to deal with:
I purchased the backordered KG-UV9G June 2 and received the radio on July 16th. BetterSafeRadio updates a message on their home page stating what order number range they are working, this a nice touch. A month after I ordered the radio I ordered an extra battery and asked them to combine the two orders in one box, which they did.
Two days after I received the radio I went on a 10 day 4000+ mile trip. I had the KG-UV9G on and scanning for the whole driving portion of the trip. By the time I returned home I had scanned with the radio for over 70 hours and TX about 30 minutes without ever recharging or changing the battery. I mainly scanned all GMRS simplex and repeater channels along with some specific repeaters I had programmed. I had it sitting next to a KG-905G which was scanning the same channels and there was no difference in reception between the two. I was able to scan the railroad frequencies that came programmed in the UV9G and was able to listen to the rail traffic in several large rail yards I passed. One evening I stayed in a hotel that was next to a major airport and scanned the preprogrammed air frequencies and didn’t hear anything. I will have to check those frequencies and change them if I need to. I was able to hit a repeater in several places but no one answered my call. I double checked that with the 905G and got the same results. On simplex the audio report were good in a mountain area 1.7 miles apart. YMMV depending on terrain, blah, blah…
The radio is a great size and easy to carry. One of the selling points besides all of the programming was the level of water and dust resistance. The screen is easy to read and has a good backlight. I was able to use the Wouxun programming software to add some repeater channels to the radio. I removed a few of the preprogrammed channels and added all of my local LEO, Fire, and Public Works frequencies for SHTF.
Speaking of SHTF, I have been asked by a couple of people about the need for some of the channels that come preprogrammed on the Pro model. Some of the channels may seem overkill, but last year we went through our states largest wildfire on record. We were forced to evacuate and leave our house and property for almost a week. Information we got from TV and radio was usually very general in nature and almost always 4-6 hours old (days old on the FM radio). I had a scanner programmed with LEO, Fire, Public Works, Air, and others. I was able to keep up with where the road blocks were being set up (LEO and Public Works), I could listen to the Fire Air command spotter plane directing water/retardant drops and directing ground crews, ground crews giving up to the minute updates to their command center and the utility company talking about power outages due to damaged equipment and proactive outages. We were among the lucky people who were able to return to an intact, undamaged home. Being able to listen to what was going on was a great help. SHTF can cover many different scenarios. This radio will be a great tool to have in your kit. Great radio, great company to deal with.

I’ve had the radio for a little more than a month and have had no issues. I even thought the manual was in good shape. Overall, you get what you pay for and this radio, although not a bargain, it’s worth the cost in my view. The programming provided was also a great value and has proven useful. Thanks!

I’ve had my KG-UV9G Pro radio for about 2 weeks now and really enjoying it. It’s a solidly made radio by the feel of it no doubt. I’ve read the manual 6 times over and still have missed things so it’s a learning process that you will enjoy. I also ordered and received the RT Systems programming software kit. It took me 30 minutes to read their instruction manual and program 30 channels into the radio, I was impressed. I notice this radio picks up the Police and Fire frequencies as well if not better than one of my Scanners. It truly is a professional radio and when you get all your frequencies programmed I know you’ll enjoy it as I do. Great radio! I finally got my KG-UV9G pro radio and have been having fun. I also use it with a pair of Baofeng UV-5x and it works well. This radio is no joke and has so much that it will take me a while to get the hang of it all, good……no, great radio!
