User programable with free Wouxun Customer Programing Software (download above – requires USB cable) or RT Systems UV9P Kit, or the CHIRP-next UV9D driver.

Note: This is the upgraded, high-power version of the Wouxun KG-UV9D(Plus). It is functionally identical, with a larger battery pack, higher power output, and a slightly different case design. The UV9P works fine with the RT Systems UV9D Advanced Programming Software (or the free factory software), and the 9P will accept any program from the 9D Plus if you’re looking to simply upgrade your power and operating time. The slimmer 2000 mAh battery pack from the UV9DPlus is also compatible with the 9P.

The Wouxun KG-UV9P works with the RT Systems UV9P Advanced Programming Software & Cable Kit, and the 9P will accept any program from the UV9PX, UV9GX, UV9G PRO or UV9D Plus (but with Tx locked to HAM).

Shipping Note: Due to USPS restrictions, I’m only able to ship 1 extra battery pack per radio and only 2 battery packs total per package via 2-3 Day Priority-Mail air service (so 2 radios, or 1 radio with an extra battery, in each box Priority Mail air shipment). Orders with 3 or more Li-ion battery packs in a box must be sent by Priority-Mail surface transport, which may take longer than the normal 2-3 days. Packages with batteries and accessories (without radios) weighing over 5.5 pounds will need to be split up into multiple shipments. Sometimes the shopping cart doesn’t properly calculate this, but I will contact you if there’s any need for additional shipping on larger/bulk orders. Contact me if you have any questions.

Note: The UV9P can be RESET by a keypad Menu option. Doing so will return the radio to a default limited/foreign MODEL1 configuration and will delete all of the pre-programmed SHTF channels. You can put the radio back into the US MODEL2 configuration by power the radio up while the #2 key is held down. However, this will not restore the SHTF programming. Please save a backup your radio codeplug (programming file) using the free Wouxun factory software and the “red” Wouxun USB cable (sold separately) or the RT Systems Advanced Programming Software & USB Cable Kit (sold separately) in case you ever unintentionally RESET the radio. If you’ve accidentally RESET your radio, please see the restoration options on my Custom Radio Programming Services page here.

Description

The advanced Wouxun KG-UV9P is a 999 channel U.S. version programmable dual-band handheld analog superheterodyne FM Ham two-way radio transceiver with wide 7-band receive range, TDR (true dual receive), and built-in cross-band repeater, ideal for amateur radio, SHTF preppers, survivalists or EmComm emergency communications. It has 2.5 kHz tuning steps and comes custom pre-programmed for SHTF* (ships with Tx locked to Ham bands only for Part 97 Amateur Radio compliance). User programmable with free downloadable Wouxun programming software (link above – requires optional USB cable & x86 Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or 11, or a Mac running Parallels), free open-source CHIRP programing software, or the RT Systems UV9D Advanced Programming Software & USB Cable Kit.

With up to up to 9 Watts of power (8W+ typical) and a talk-around range of 1 to 6+ miles (many more when used with repeaters), the KG-UV9P provides reliable emergency radio communications for amateurs, preppers, survivalists, Neighborhood Watch, ARES, RACES & CERT groups to keep in touch when other methods of communication break down. IP55 rated and Part 15B Certified & Part 97 compliant. The BSR version of the UV9P has custom power calibration (for the US Ham band centers) that’s better suited to the US market, which you won’t find elsewhere.

The KG-UV9P operating range is as good or better than any other affordable Commercial/Ham radio, even with its included stock flexible antenna, which is better than most radios in this price range. As well, with an after-market high-gain duck, whip, telescoping, emergency roll-up J-pole, mobile mag-mount or base station antenna, you will see a significantly improved talk range, even when communicating with another stock handheld. The KG-UV9P is also repeater-capable (even split-band), greatly extending the potential operating range. In addition, the radio features a single or bi-directional cross-band repeater, turning the Wouxun KG-UV9P into a powerful portable analog communication device, especially with its extra transmit power. With its True Dual Receive, the UV9P is also great for AMSAT Amateur Satellite work.

6 reviews for Wouxun KG-UV9P Amateur Ham Two-Way Radio & SHTF Scanner

  1. Ralph Krohne (verified owner)

    I like it so much…
My Ham radio group was among the many volunteers at the 2021 Climb To The Clouds race at Mt. Washington, NH. I was stationed at the 5000′ mark and had no trouble communicating with the comms trailer at the base of the mountain using the stock “rubber duck” antenna. I like it so much I recently purchased the KGUV9PX.

  2. Jeremy McPherson (verified owner)

What a fantastic radio: The balance and responsiveness is perfect. I do like the horizontal orientation of the screen on the 935 series versus the vertical orientation on the UV9 but man the form factor and balance of the UV9 really takes the cake. Crystal clear audio both on transmit and receive. Very intuitive programming from the handset. There is a lot of power in this HT. And the SHTF presets are great. A massive collection of various things that could come in very handy. If you’re on the fence about snagging one of these, do it. Granted they cost the same as two or three other HT’s but from the second you turn it on and hit PTT the first time you’ll know where that money was spent. Nothing wrong having a few beater/cheapy radios knocking around too but this HT provides a very high value experience.

A great radio at a great price: Replacing my original review with additional info hopefully preventing some gray hair for others:

    1. This is a great radio at a great price
    2. Mark @ BSR is most helpful if you have any issues
    3. For now, do not program this radio with CHIRP (or read details below for caveats)

It seems there is a programming anomaly for both the UV9D+ and UV9P and the CHIRP programming software (at least on Mac):

It appears that CHIRP is unable to add or delete channels, only to modify already programmed ones on the radio.

An existing channel can be modified with chirp programming (i.e. its frequency, channel name, tone, etc.) OK
An unassigned channel on the radio will not be created even if it is present in the CHIRP file. FAIL
An assigned channel on the radio will not be deleted even if is not assigned in the CHIRP file. FAIL
No errors are generated by CHIRP or the radio during “Upload to Radio”.

More details in a bug report filed with CHIRP here:
    https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/8253

If you did a hard reset or find yourself otherwise reduced to a few factory channels and unable to add or delete channels with CHIRP, there is a (tedious) way out:

Looking at the Wouxun website, they now have a specific version of their programming tool (which looks like something out of a 1980’s movie about computers) for the UV9P (previously I had read that you can use a UV9D+ programmer, but since they had one specifically for the 9P, I used that). You can use it to restore visibility of channels (and then subsequently use CHIRP to modify those visible channels).

Not sure whether the bug is on the CHIRP or Wouxun side regarding the channel programmability, no one has chimed in yet. Hopefully this info will provide people with a workaround for now.

[ED Note: We don’t officially support CHIRP and recommend the RT Systems RPS-KGUV9-USB Advanced Programming Software and USB Cable Kit instead, which will run via Parallels on a Mac, or natively in Win 7, 8, 8.1 & 10, with the KG-UV9P & KG-UV9D(Plus).]

A Great and Unique Radio: I use this radio for satellite work, repeaters, and as a cross-band repeater on my property. This is the only handheld that can do all that, and put out more then 5 watts to boot! It also has excellent audio quality. My only gripe is that the screen is difficult to see outside, even though I have it on full brightness. It easily programs with CHIRP and an FTDI [USB] cable. I have also used the Wouxun software but I find CHIRP is easier to use. It is a great and unique radio. Especially for the price.

  5. Edward Yancey (verified owner)

BSR Mark Has Done It Again: Great service, fast answers and knows how to make an idiot not feel like an idiot! I just bought a second radio because I hit the reset in the menu on my first radio, and BSR Mark hooked me up with another radio [and advanced programming software] and told me exactly how to save my first radio. He even saved me some money on shipping by bundling my 2 separate orders! I’ll never buy a radio from anywhere else. Great radios, great service with prompt, knowledgeable after-sale service.

  6. Kenneth van Wyk (verified owner)

I Am Supremely Satisfied: Preliminary review after 24 hours. I’ll update later if anything materially changes.

I’ve used this radio now on several of the 70cm and 2m repeaters I regularly hang out on. I’ve tried it in optimum (high ground) locations as well as seriously sub-optimum (bottom of a valley) locations. I’ve tried it with the factory “rubber duck” antenna, as well as a higher gain telescoping one, and even one of my Ed Fong J-Poles I purchased here. I should also point out this was an upgrade from one of the really cheap imported radios I’ve been using for months.

The difference was staggering. I was able to hit and carry on conversations on all the nearby repeaters and even some of the distant (45 miles) ones. The signal gets a bit staticky when I go inside my home, but outside has been fabulous — and I’m mounting my Ed Fong antenna on my roof in a couple of weeks.

I can very honestly say that for the first time, my connections sound more like a telephone conversation than that of a bad walkie talkie.

I am supremely satisfied after my first series of “field tests” with this radio, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality handheld radio.

I will again point out I have no business affiliation here whatsoever. I’m nothing more than a highly satisfied customer — and not just because of the products I’ve purchased, but from the service I’ve gotten from Mark here at BSR. I recommend without reservation.
